Leave No Child Inside

The movement to reconnect children to the natural world has arisen quickly, spontaneously, and across the usual social, political, and economic dividing lines. Read Richard Louv’s article about this crucially important groundswell in the March-April 2007 issue of Orion. Then tell us what you think, and share what’s happening in your school, neighborhood or town to get kids back to nature.

Please note: Richard Louv joined this discussion at several points during the days of March 13th and March 20th, reading and responding to posts and posting himself. We're grateful to him for his gracious and thoughtful participation.

Making Other Arrangements

James Howard Kunstler laid down a marker in the January-February issue of
Orion: Americans will face fearsome consequences if we don't fundamentally
reshape the way we live, shifting our society away from petroleum and its
handmaidens, geographical sprawl and the globalized economy. Yet the most
powerful changes will, collectively, be those undertaken by individuals.
Read Kunstler's article here and tell us what you're doing in your life --
with your family, your neighborhood, your community -- to make other
arrangements for a sustainable future. How do these efforts nourish your well-being, your spirit, your relationship with your place?

Readers can either post their comments at the bottom of this page, or submit them in writing to the Orion editors. Selected reader submissions will be published in a new Orion department, starting in the March/April 2007 issue. To submit, please mail your essay (no longer than 500 words) to Orion, 187 Main Street, Great Barrington, MA 01230 or e-mail it to MOA@orionsociety.org. All submissions become the property of Orion and The Orion Society.

Green Rage

The radical environmental activists who were prosecuted in Eugene under the
nation's counter-terrorism laws believed they were acting in defense of the
Earth. Are they, as they perceive themselves to be, the high-minded vanguard
of a new society? Or are they criminally misguided souls?

Read Matt Rasmussen's article in the January-February issue of Orion, and
tell us what you think.

Taking On Goliath: Coal Bed Methane Development

Across the West, gas development is devastating land and people.
Now citizens are fighting back.

Since the late 1990s, a wave of energy exploitation has accelerated across the American West. Much of it has taken the form of coal bed methane (CBM) development, which entails drilling many shallow, closely spaced gas wells across often vast territories, bringing industrialization to country that formerly was open and quiet, and to the people and creatures who live there.

Please read the Orion articles and share your comments, ideas, and thoughts on America's appetite for energy.

What Do You Do with with Number One and Number Two?

Share your stories (and solutions) about those awkward moments while traveling. Encountering other cultures often gets boiled down to some rather basic experiences... If you haven't done so already, check out "Sitting Pretty," an article by Nicole McClelland in the November/December '06 Orion magazine.
